Disorders of Protein and Lipid Glycosylation (ICIMD category 18)

The umbrella union of inherited disorders in which the lesion is in the attachment, remodeling, or removal of a glycan on a protein or a lipid. Glycans are added to most secreted and membrane proteins and to a large class of lipids; a defect anywhere in that machinery — precursor supply, transfer to the acceptor, Golgi maturation, or the cytosolic clearance of released glycans — hypoglycosylates many client molecules at once, which is why the resulting diseases are characteristically multisystem. This grouping points down to five nested sub-groupings drawn on the branch of the glycosylation machinery that fails: protein N-glycosylation, protein O-glycosylation (including the glycosaminoglycan chains built on an O-xylose), GPI-anchor (lipid) glycosylation, precursor-supply and ER-quality-control lesions that hit several branches at once, and cytosolic deglycosylation.

Where this grouping sits

39 disease entries belong to this grouping through nested groupings. They appear in the coverage table below as nested members, are evaluated against the membership criteria like direct members, and count toward coverage.

Why this grouping

Grouped on the shared mechanism family — a lesion in glycoconjugate metabolism, with hypoglycosylation (or, for the deglycosylation arm, failure to clear a released glycan) as the common intermediate lesion — and on an established nosological convention: category 18 of the International Classification of Inherited Metabolic Disorders (ICIMD; Ferreira et al. 2021, PMID:33340416), whose own subdivision into N-linked, O-linked, lipid, and multiple-pathway glycosylation disorders is what the nested sub-groupings mirror. This grouping points down to nested sub-groupings rather than listing member diseases flatly, following the pattern of Inborn_Errors_of_Immunity over the IUIS tables. It adds no direct disease members of its own. Each child keeps its own, narrower NECESSARY criterion; this parent's criterion is the disjunction of theirs, so any disease that satisfies its own sub-grouping necessarily satisfies this one. Why this exists rather than being folded into the existing Congenital_Disorders_of_Glycosylation grouping. That grouping is deliberately scoped to protein N-glycosylation and its precursor and trafficking supply lines — a boundary its own rationale states and defends — while binding MONDO:0015286 (congenital disorder of glycosylation), which is the broader concept covering O-linked, GPI-anchor, and glycosphingolipid defects as well. A grouping cannot both be deliberately narrower than a concept and exactMatch it. Creating the umbrella resolves that: the exactMatch to MONDO:0015286 moves here, and the N-glycan grouping is downgraded to skos:narrowMatch, which still counts as curated for MONDO coverage. Naming. ICIMD titles category 18 "Congenital disorders of glycosylation", but that name is already taken in kb/groupings/ by the N-glycan-scoped child and grouping names are foreign-key targets, so renaming it would break existing references and history records. This grouping therefore takes a descriptive name; "ICIMD category 18" is carried in display_name so the correspondence is not lost. Boundary — two exclusions worth recording, because both are things a reader would expect to find here. Glycogen storage diseases are out: glycogen is a storage homopolysaccharide, not a glycoconjugate, and ICIMD places disorders of glycogen metabolism outside the glycan-metabolism categories explicitly. The mucopolysaccharidoses are also out: they are lysosomal catabolism of glycosaminoglycans, already held by Mucopolysaccharidoses beneath Lysosomal_Storage_Disorders, and ICIMD places glycosaminoglycan *synthesis* under O-linked protein glycosylation rather than placing GAG degradation in category 18. Both are glycobiology in the loose sense; neither is a defect of glycan attachment to a protein or lipid.

MONDO alignment & provenance

skos:exactMatch MONDO:0015286 · congenital disorder of glycosylation

MONDO:0015286 is the broad congenital-disorder-of-glycosylation class, spanning N-linked, O-linked, GPI-anchor, and glycosphingolipid defects. That is this grouping's concept, not the narrower N-glycan concept of the nested Congenital_Disorders_of_Glycosylation child, which now carries skos:narrowMatch against the same term. MONDO descendants without DisMech entries are curation gaps rather than a reason to downgrade the predicate.

MONDO consistency: inconsistent Re-derived 2026-09-18 over all 38 transitively held members: 24 are hierarchical descendants of MONDO:0015286 and 14 are not. Recorded as INCONSISTENT because that is what was measured; the mapping predicate is deliberately left at skos:exactMatch pending a decision, and this note is the evidence for that decision rather than a pre-emption of it. Method, reproducible without a local MONDO build: each member's own MONDO term is resolved to its ancestor set via the OLS hierarchicalAncestors endpoint and MONDO:0015286 looked up in it — one bounded upward walk per member (13-38 terms) instead of one unbounded downward expansion of the class. The OAK ols:mondo adapter raises NotImplementedError for both directions, but the REST endpoint underneath answers ancestors. The 14 divide into two kinds, and only one is a defect. (1) Genuine scope difference: MONDO scopes congenital disorder of glycosylation narrower than ICIMD category 18 does. The two deglycosylation members sit under MONDO:0031376 congenital disorder of deglycosylation, a *sibling* of MONDO:0015286 beneath MONDO:0019052 inborn errors of metabolism, and five of the six GPI-anchor members are likewise outside the class. ICIMD puts both inside category 18; MONDO does not. (2) Classification by clinical presentation rather than mechanism: Dystroglycanopathy sits under muscular dystrophy, Autosomal Recessive Cutis Laxa Type 2A under cutis laxa and hereditary skin disorder (verified against its direct parents, which carry no CDG term), the SLC10A7 and EXTL3 entries under skeletal system disorder, the PIG-gene entries under the epilepsies, and VPS51-CDG under pontocerebellar hypoplasia. These are candidate MONDO term requests, not membership errors. What this means for the predicate: the umbrella's concept properly *contains* the MONDO class rather than equalling it, which is skos:broadMatch and not skos:exactMatch. The reason it has not simply been flipped is that the change is not free — per CLAUDE.md a broadMatch does not count as curated for MONDO coverage, and scripts/grouping_mondo_gaps.py derives descendant gaps only from an exactMatch, so flipping it here after the N-glycan child was downgraded to narrowMatch would leave MONDO:0015286 with no exactMatch anywhere in the family and silently end gap derivation for the whole CDG branch. Semantics and tooling disagree; that is a design call for the decision register, not a predicate to change twice in two days.

Membership criteria

NECESSARY  (member ⇒ criteria)
A member is an inherited disorder whose proximal lesion is in the biosynthesis, transfer, remodeling, or removal of a glycan attached to a protein or a lipid — including the nucleotide-sugar and dolichol precursor supply feeding those steps, the Golgi machinery that matures the glycan, and the cytosolic enzymes that clear a released glycan. Disorders of glycogen metabolism and of lysosomal glycosaminoglycan catabolism are excluded.
  • OR The disjunction of the five nested sub-groupings' own NECESSARY criteria. Stated as a union rather than as a single broader process term because no one GO class subsumes protein glycosylation, GPI-anchor (lipid) glycosylation, and protein deglycosylation; a member satisfies this parent through whichever branch its own sub-grouping already requires.

Differentiating mechanism
Phosphomannomutase 2 interconverts mannose-6-phosphate and mannose-1-phosphate, the step that feeds GDP-mannose into the whole lipid-linked oligosaccharide assembly line. Its deficiency (CDG-Ia) is therefore upstream of every mannosyltransferase defect in this grouping: ALG1, ALG3, ALG9 and ALG12 each lose one step, while PMM2 loss starves all of them of donor. It sits alongside MPI and PGM1 as a precursor-supply defect rather than an assembly defect, and MPI is its instructive counterpart — the adjacent step in the same supply line, but treatable with oral mannose where PMM2-CDG is not. PMM2-CDG is also the reference case for the group clinically. It is the commonest CDG by a wide margin and the one whose phenotype the others are described against, and it is where the group's genetic architecture is clearest: complete loss of activity is not compatible with survival, so patients are hypomorph compound heterozygotes and per-allele residual activity sets severity.

DHRSX-Congenital Disorder of Glycosylation DISEASE
Differentiating mechanism
DHRSX-CDG (CDG1DD) is a type I CDG upstream of LLO assembly: the defect is in dolichol synthesis itself rather than in transferring sugars onto it. DHRSX performs the first and third steps of the three-step conversion of polyprenol to dolichol, with SRD5A3 catalysing only the second, so its loss raises the polyprenol-to-dolichol ratio and starves every downstream dolichol-dependent step at once. It is also the only member with pseudoautosomal-recessive inheritance, since DHRSX lies in PAR1 of the X and Y chromosomes.

Seizures-scoliosis-macrocephaly syndrome DISEASE
Differentiating mechanism
Heparan sulfate chain polymerization. Biallelic hypomorphic EXT2 shortens the chain rather than initiating it, and is a distinct disease from the heterozygous EXT2 loss that causes hereditary multiple exostoses — the same gene, a different dose and a different phenotype.

Autosomal Recessive Cutis Laxa Type 2A DISEASE
Differentiating mechanism
ATP6V0A2, the Golgi V-ATPase a2 subunit. The lesion is Golgi luminal acidification, not a transferase or a nucleotide-sugar pool, and it disables N- and O-linked glycosylation together — which is what places it here rather than in a branch-specific sibling. The distinguishing consequence is defective elastic-fibre assembly, giving cutis laxa beside the neuronal migration defect.

Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria DISEASE
Differentiating mechanism
Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria is the ACQUIRED member: a somatic PIGA mutation in a hematopoietic stem cell abolishes the committed first step of GPI anchor synthesis (transfer of GlcNAc to phosphatidylinositol). The resulting loss of GPI-anchored complement regulators CD55 and CD59 on the clonal red cells causes complement-mediated intravascular hemolysis. Unlike the germline members it is X-linked-somatic and clonal, not inherited, and its phenotype is hematologic rather than a developmental encephalopathy.

Developmental And Epileptic Encephalopathy 38 DISEASE
Differentiating mechanism
DEE38 is the ARV1 arm of inherited GPI deficiency. ARV1 is not a PIG/PGAP biosynthetic enzyme but a facilitating component of the GPI-GnT complex that initiates GPI-anchor assembly (it associates with PIGQ and promotes recruitment of the phosphatidylinositol substrate), so ARV1 loss reduces GPI-anchor synthesis at its very first, committed step. Patient neutrophils and fibroblasts show reduced surface GPI-anchored proteins, placing DEE38 among the inherited GPI-deficiency disorders; the phenotype is an autosomal-recessive developmental and epileptic encephalopathy with progressive cerebral and cerebellar atrophy, without the hyperphosphatasia of the Mabry/HPMRS arm. Its membership rests on the NECESSARY GO:0180046 criterion rather than on MONDO ancestry — MONDO does not yet classify MONDO:0014868 under disorder of GPI anchor biosynthesis.

Developmental And Epileptic Encephalopathy 77 DISEASE
Differentiating mechanism
DEE77 (PIGQ-CDG, MCAHS4, GPIBD19) is the PIGQ arm of inherited GPI deficiency. PIGQ is a component of the GPI-N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase complex that performs the first committed step of the pathway — transfer of GlcNAc from UDP-GlcNAc onto phosphatidylinositol on the cytoplasmic face of the ER — so the lesion sits alongside PIGA, PIGC, PIGH, PIGP and PIGY rather than at the mannosyltransferase or remodelling steps. Patient granulocytes, leukocytes and fibroblasts show reduced surface GPI-anchored proteins, restored by wild-type PIGQ cDNA. The phenotype is a severe autosomal recessive developmental and epileptic encephalopathy with multiple congenital anomalies, high childhood mortality (median survival 5.5 years across the 13 published patients), and a consistent craniofacial gestalt. It differs from the other first-step members curated here in one respect worth flagging: elevated serum alkaline phosphatase is reported in 62% of PIGQ patients, which the pathway-position account of hyperphosphatasia — a Mabry/HPMRS feature arising from mannose-bearing incomplete anchors — does not predict for a block this early. That tension is recorded as a knowledge gap on the disease entry rather than resolved here.

O-mannosylation of alpha-dystroglycan. The matriglycan that binds laminin is built on an O-mannose, so the whole gene series (POMT1, POMT2, POMGNT1/2, POMK, B3GALNT2, B4GAT1, RXYLT1, FKTN, FKRP, LARGE1, CRPPA) converges on loss of laminin binding at the muscle and pial basement membrane.

Glycosylphosphatidylinositol Biosynthesis Defect 15 DISEASE
Differentiating mechanism
GPIBD15 is the GPAA1 arm of inherited GPI deficiency and the only member here whose lesion is in the GPI transamidase, the five-subunit complex (PIGK, GPAA1, PIGS, PIGT, PIGU) that attaches the completed anchor to precursor proteins. The anchor is made but not transferred, so surface GPI-anchored proteins fall while serum alkaline phosphatase stays normal or low rather than raised, unlike the Mabry/HPMRS arm. Patients have developmental delay, hypotonia, early-onset often drug-resistant epilepsy, acquired cerebellar atrophy and osteopenia. It meets the NECESSARY criterion through attachment of GPI anchor to protein (GO:0016255), a component process of GPI anchored protein biosynthesis.

Multiple Congenital Anomalies-Hypotonia-Seizures Syndrome DISEASE
Differentiating mechanism
MCAHS is the severe developmental-and-epileptic-encephalopathy arm of germline inherited GPI deficiency, an umbrella over three subtypes defined by the affected GPI-pathway gene: MCAHS1 (PIGN, ethanolamine-phosphate transfer), MCAHS2 (PIGA, the committed first GlcNAc-transfer step; X-linked and mechanistically distinct from the somatic-PIGA clone of PNH), and MCAHS3 (PIGT, GPI transamidase attachment). Unlike the Mabry/HPMRS arm, MCAHS does not show persistent hyperphosphatasia (serum alkaline phosphatase is normal, or low in PIGT/MCAHS3), and the clinical picture is dominated by multiple congenital anomalies and early-onset drug-resistant epileptic encephalopathy rather than the bone-enzyme abnormality.

description: >-
The umbrella union of inherited disorders in which the lesion is in the
attachment, remodeling, or removal of a glycan on a protein or a lipid. Glycans
  are added to most secreted and membrane proteins and to a large class of lipids;
a defect anywhere in that machinery — precursor supply, transfer to the acceptor,
Golgi maturation, or the cytosolic clearance of released glycans — hypoglycosylates
many client molecules at once, which is why the resulting diseases are
characteristically multisystem. This grouping points down to five nested
sub-groupings drawn on the branch of the glycosylation machinery that fails:
protein N-glycosylation, protein O-glycosylation (including the
glycosaminoglycan chains built on an O-xylose), GPI-anchor (lipid)
glycosylation, precursor-supply and ER-quality-control lesions that hit
several branches at once, and cytosolic deglycosylation.
grouping_basis:
- SHARED_MECHANISM
- CLINICAL_CONVENTION
grouping_rationale: >-
Grouped on the shared mechanism family — a lesion in glycoconjugate metabolism,
with hypoglycosylation (or, for the deglycosylation arm, failure to clear a
released glycan) as the common intermediate lesion — and on an established
nosological convention: category 18 of the International Classification of
Inherited Metabolic Disorders (ICIMD; Ferreira et al. 2021, PMID:33340416),
whose own subdivision into N-linked, O-linked, lipid, and multiple-pathway
glycosylation disorders is what the nested sub-groupings mirror.

This grouping points down to nested sub-groupings rather than listing
member diseases flatly, following the pattern of Inborn_Errors_of_Immunity over
the IUIS tables. It adds no direct disease members of its own. Each child keeps
its own, narrower NECESSARY criterion; this parent's criterion is the
disjunction of theirs, so any disease that satisfies its own sub-grouping
  necessarily satisfies this one.

Why this exists rather than being folded into the existing
Congenital_Disorders_of_Glycosylation grouping. That grouping is deliberately
scoped to protein N-glycosylation and its precursor and trafficking supply
lines — a boundary its own rationale states and defends — while binding
MONDO:0015286 (congenital disorder of glycosylation), which is the broader
concept covering O-linked, GPI-anchor, and glycosphingolipid defects as well.
A grouping cannot both be deliberately narrower than a concept and exactMatch
it. Creating the umbrella resolves that: the exactMatch to MONDO:0015286 moves
here, and the N-glycan grouping is downgraded to skos:narrowMatch, which still
counts as curated for MONDO coverage.

Naming. ICIMD titles category 18 "Congenital disorders of glycosylation", but
that name is already taken in kb/groupings/ by the N-glycan-scoped child and
grouping names are foreign-key targets, so renaming it would break existing
references and history records. This grouping therefore takes a descriptive
name; "ICIMD category 18" is carried in display_name so the correspondence is
  not lost.

Boundary — two exclusions worth recording, because both are things a reader
would expect to find here. Glycogen storage diseases are out: glycogen is a
storage homopolysaccharide, not a glycoconjugate, and ICIMD places disorders of
glycogen metabolism outside the glycan-metabolism categories explicitly. The
mucopolysaccharidoses are also out: they are lysosomal catabolism of
glycosaminoglycans, already held by Mucopolysaccharidoses beneath
Lysosomal_Storage_Disorders, and ICIMD places glycosaminoglycan *synthesis*
under O-linked protein glycosylation rather than placing GAG degradation in
category 18. Both are glycobiology in the loose sense; neither is a defect of
glycan attachment to a protein or lipid.

MONDO:0015286 is the broad congenital-disorder-of-glycosylation class,
      spanning N-linked, O-linked, GPI-anchor, and glycosphingolipid defects.
That is this grouping's concept, not the narrower N-glycan concept of the
nested Congenital_Disorders_of_Glycosylation child, which now carries
skos:narrowMatch against the same term. MONDO descendants without DisMech
entries are curation gaps rather than a reason to downgrade the predicate.

Re-derived 2026-09-18 over all 38 transitively held members: 24 are
hierarchical descendants of MONDO:0015286 and 14 are not. Recorded as
INCONSISTENT because that is what was measured; the mapping predicate is
deliberately left at skos:exactMatch pending a decision, and this note is
the evidence for that decision rather than a pre-emption of it.

member (13-38 terms) instead of one unbounded downward expansion of the
class. The OAK ols:mondo adapter raises NotImplementedError for both
directions, but the REST endpoint underneath answers ancestors.

The 14 divide into two kinds, and only one is a defect. (1) Genuine scope
difference: MONDO scopes congenital disorder of glycosylation narrower
than ICIMD category 18 does. The two deglycosylation members sit under
MONDO:0031376 congenital disorder of deglycosylation, a *sibling* of
MONDO:0015286 beneath MONDO:0019052 inborn errors of metabolism, and five
of the six GPI-anchor members are likewise outside the class. ICIMD puts
both inside category 18; MONDO does not. (2) Classification by clinical
presentation rather than mechanism: Dystroglycanopathy sits under
muscular dystrophy, Autosomal Recessive Cutis Laxa Type 2A under cutis
laxa and hereditary skin disorder (verified against its direct parents,
which carry no CDG term), the SLC10A7 and EXTL3 entries under skeletal
system disorder, the PIG-gene entries under the epilepsies, and
VPS51-CDG under pontocerebellar hypoplasia. These are candidate MONDO
        term requests, not membership errors.

What this means for the predicate: the umbrella's concept properly
*contains* the MONDO class rather than equalling it, which is
skos:broadMatch and not skos:exactMatch. The reason it has not simply
been flipped is that the change is not free — per CLAUDE.md a broadMatch
does not count as curated for MONDO coverage, and
scripts/grouping_mondo_gaps.py derives descendant gaps only from an
exactMatch, so flipping it here after the N-glycan child was downgraded
to narrowMatch would leave MONDO:0015286 with no exactMatch anywhere in
the family and silently end gap derivation for the whole CDG branch.
Semantics and tooling disagree; that is a design call for the decision
register, not a predicate to change twice in two days.

notes: >-
Why the umbrella was created. The four children were already behaving as
siblings without a parent: each one's grouping_rationale names the others as
the home for what it excludes. Disorders_of_GPI_Anchor_Biosynthesis excludes
DPM2-CDG and MPDU1-CDG because their Dol-P-Man lesion belongs "in the broader
  glycosylation grouping"; Congenital_Disorders_of_Glycosylation names GPI,
multiple-pathway, and TSR O-fucosylation as sibling homes. That mutual
cross-referencing was the signal that a node was missing, and it means the
boundary work this grouping depends on was already done in prose.

Resolved — the O-linked child. This grouping was created holding only four of
ICIMD category 18's five subdivisions, with no member for O-linked protein
glycosylation, and said so. Disorders of O-linked Protein Glycosylation now
fills it, drawn from the five entries that already carried
  classifications.icimd_category o_linked_protein_glycosylation: the
Dystroglycanopathy entry (O-mannose), Peters plus syndrome (O-glucose on
thrombospondin type-1 repeats), and the three glycosaminoglycan-synthesis
disorders ICIMD places in this subdivision rather than a separate one
(B3GAT3, EXTL3, EXT2). All five evaluate SATISFIED against its NECESSARY
  criterion.

Resolved — the candidate backlog. The eleven category-18 entries that belonged
to no child are now placed, and the SUFFICIENT ICIMD criterion reports no
candidates. Beyond the five O-linked entries above: MOGS-CDG, B4GALT1-CDG and
CCDC115-CDG went to the N-glycan child, which is the same membership drift the
2026-08-20 review corrected for seven other CDG entries; Developmental and
Epileptic Encephalopathy 55 (PIGP) went to the GPI child; and Autosomal
Recessive Cutis Laxa Type 2A (ATP6V0A2, Golgi pH) and Short Stature,
Amelogenesis Imperfecta, and Skeletal Dysplasia with Scoliosis (SLC10A7, Golgi
calcium) went to the multiple-pathway child. The last two annotate protein
O-linked glycosylation and were deliberately *not* put in the O-linked child:
their lesions are Golgi luminal conditions that disable several branches at
once, and O-glycosylation being among a disorder's casualties does not make it
  an O-linked disorder.

An empty candidate list is a statement about ICIMD coverage, not about
completeness. It means every entry that *carries* a category-18 classification
is now held by a child; entries whose glycosylation lesion is real but
unclassified remain invisible to that criterion. Widening coverage of
classifications.icimd_category across kb/disorders is the way to make the
  report say more.

  Resolved — UGP2. UGP2-related developmental and epileptic encephalopathy 83
evaluated NOT_SATISFIED when this grouping was created, inheriting a
pre-existing failure against its own child's NECESSARY criterion. The cause
was a granularity mismatch in the criterion rather than a gap in the entry:
ontology closure runs downward, so an entry annotated at an ancestor of the
process a criterion names never satisfies it, and both criteria named only
specific branches (GO:0006487, GO:0006493) while the entry annotated
GO:0009100 glycoprotein metabolic process. The entry was right to decline a
branch — its cited result is hypoglycosylated LAMP2, which the source does not
resolve to N- or O-linked, and UGP2's lesion is UDP-glucose supply feeding
several branches at once, which is why it sits in the multiple-pathway child
  at all.

Fixed on both sides, each change standing on its own. The entry node moved to
GO:0009101 glycoprotein biosynthetic process: more specific than what it
carried, since it excludes the glycoprotein catabolism GO:0009100 also covers,
and still branch-agnostic, so it claims no more than the source does. The
child criterion and this disjunction each gained a GO:0009101 operand, which
is the level the child's own rationale always described — grouping members "at
the pathway-placement level" — and which closure makes subsume the named-branch
operands, so nothing that satisfied them stops doing so. Note GO:0006486, the
term an editor might reach for as "protein glycosylation", is **obsolete** —
GO labels it "obsolete protein glycosylation" and records
term_replaced_by GO:0009101, which is why GO:0009101 is both the replacement
and the common ancestor of the N- and O-linked classes. An earlier version of
this note said GO:0006486 did not exist; that came from passing the CURIE to
an OLS *text* search, which matches nothing, and reading the empty result as
absence. Resolve a CURIE by its term endpoint, not by searching for it.

Resolved — MONDO closure, and it found a problem. The closure was declared
UNKNOWN because the configured ols:mondo adapter cannot expand a class's
descendants. Inverting the question removed the need to: instead of expanding
MONDO:0015286 downward and testing members against the result, each member's
own term is walked upward and the class looked up in its ancestor set. That is
bounded per member, needs no 588 MB local build, and the OLS REST endpoint
serves it directly. The result is in the mapping's consistency block: 24 of 38
members descend from the mapped class, 14 do not, and the umbrella's concept
therefore contains the MONDO class rather than equalling it. Whether the
predicate should move from skos:exactMatch to skos:broadMatch is a live
question with tooling consequences and is argued in that block rather than
  decided here.

Coverage of the ICIMD category-18 classification itself is thin — 20 entries
KB-wide, and only 20 of this grouping's 38 transitively held diseases carry a
value (every one of those 20 KB-wide entries is now held here, which is why
the SUFFICIENT criterion reports no candidates). That is why the ICIMD criterion is SUFFICIENT (a discovery lever) rather
than NECESSARY (an audit of the listed members).
